Moth Night

All Day, Sep 28, 2019

Come out to the park amphitheater for a celebration of these nocturnal pollinators! Moths are like butterflies of the night, and their variety and colors will amaze you. Join us as we welcome enthusiasts in the field of all things "mothy," Chrissy McClarren and Andrew Reago. After a short program about moths, they will set up black lights and an ultra-bright mercury vapor light to attract moths and other nocturnal insects. The moths and insects that we count will be added to the official park record, and will be sent in as part of a statewide effort to record species in Missouri state parks.  We find a new species for the park almost every time we do a survey! Will you be the first to discover a species we have not recorded?
Other fascinating insects show up to our light, such as water beetles, treehoppers, longhorned beetles, and sometimes even butterflies! Bring flashlights, cameras and a keen sense of awe and wonder.
This event is free and open to the public. If you would like more information on this event, please call the park office at 636-528-7247.
